An autumn weekend with your child doesn't have to mean staying in the hotel and constantly checking the weather forecast. It is a great time for a family getaway, exploring new places, and enjoying autumn attractions. So, where should you plan a family trip, and what can you do if the weather doesn't cooperate? We offer some suggestions on destinations to choose at this time of year.
Why plan an autumn weekend for the whole family?
The end of summer doesn't mean giving up on family trips. Quite the opposite—crowds at popular destinations thin out in the autumn, meaning shorter lines for attractions. You can devote more time to sightseeing, outdoor activities, and relaxation. Accommodation prices often drop after the summer holidays, and attractive packages designed for autumn getaways offer an added incentive.
Such a weekend can be a pleasant break from the school routine and extracurricular activities for children, while allowing the whole family to spend more time together. However, autumn weather can be unpredictable, so it is worth preparing two plans: one for a sunny day and another for rain and cooler temperatures. This makes it easier to adjust your itinerary to the conditions and make the most of the weekend, regardless of the weather.

An autumn mountain trip – trails and beautiful views
An autumn trip to the mountains with a child doesn't have to involve summiting high peaks. Often, a shorter route leading to a mountain hut or a viewpoint is a better choice. Gentler trails can be found in the Beskid and Pieniny ranges, making both regions excellent options for a family's first hikes. The Table Mountains (Góry Stołowe) are another interesting destination. Narrow passages between rock formations and natural labyrinths add variety to the walk, turning a mountain hike into a real adventure for children.
The Karkonosze and Jizera Mountains are also excellent choices for a family getaway, offering easier trails, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints. If you plan to explore the Jizera Mountains in depth, Świeradów-Zdrój is a great place to stay. The local Forest Park Resort & SPA offers comfortable rooms and apartments, and its location makes it easy to plan hiking and cycling trips in the area. After an active day, adults can relax in the wellness zone, while children can enjoy the water park, Kids Club, and multimedia entertainment center. On-site attractions also provide a perfect alternative when the weather prevents you from hitting the trails.
An autumn getaway to Masuria: close to nature
The Land of a Thousand Lakes is primarily associated with family summer holidays, but it is well worth visiting after the peak season ends. Masuria is much quieter in the autumn, and the forests surrounding the lakes take on shades of gold, red, and brown. Fewer crowds allow you to explore the region at a leisurely pace, escape the city bustle, and spend time immersed in nature.
If the weather cooperates, you can enjoy a family forest walk, a bike ride, Nordic walking, or a trip along one of the local nature trails. It is also worth including a visit to the Wild Animal Park in Kadzidłowo, where children can see animals up close. Older visitors might be interested in the Boyen Fortress in Giżycko; after sightseeing, you can take a stroll through the town and relax by the lake. During a longer stay, you can also visit Olsztyn, located in the Warmia region, which is home to, among other things, a planetarium and the Museum of Warmia and Masuria.
A Weekend Getaway to the Polish Seaside
A family holiday by the Polish seaside doesn't have to be limited to July or August. Although autumn weather isn't usually ideal for swimming, the proximity to the beach offers plenty of ways to spend your time. Children can collect seashells, hunt for amber, and watch the waves, while walks provide opportunities to visit the harbor, a lighthouse, or scenic viewpoints.
The Tricity (Trójmiasto) is a great destination for an autumn weekend, offering plenty of attractions even outside the summer season. You can explore Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Sopot over the course of a few days, adjusting your itinerary to the weather. On a sunny day, it is worth walking out onto the Sopot Pier, visiting the beach in Orłowo, or strolling through Gdańsk’s historic center. The Gdynia Aquarium, which offers a close-up look at the underwater world, can also be a highlight of a family trip.
The Kraków-Częstochowa Upland for a Family Trip
In the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, family walks can be combined with castle tours and exploring rock formations, making the region an excellent choice for children interested in history. It is well worth visiting Ojców National Park, Poland's smallest national park. In the Prądnik Valley, you can see the Kraków Gate (Brama Krakowska), as well as Hercules' Club (Maczuga Herkulesa) and the castle at Pieskowa Skała nearby. Routes can be tailored to the children's ages, so the trip doesn't have to involve a long, strenuous hike.
An autumn visit is also a great opportunity to explore the Trail of the Eagles' Nests (Szlak Orlich Gniazd). You don't have to traverse the entire route—simply choosing one or two castles, such as Ogrodzieniec Castle or Bobolice Castle, is enough. Ruins, defensive walls, and the legends surrounding them can make sightseeing far more engaging for children than a standard walk. In autumn, it is best to start your tour early and keep in mind that rocky sections can become slippery after rain. While in the area, the Museum of Old Crafts at the Old Mill in Żarki is also worth a visit; its interactive exhibition shows children how artisans worked in the past and the tools they used in their daily lives.
Podlasie – Autumn attractions close to nature
Podlasie is a great destination for a more relaxed family getaway, especially if you value connecting with nature and avoiding crowds. Autumn is the perfect time to combine relaxation with exploring the region. In the Białowieża Forest, you can take a short educational trail or a guided walk to learn about the local wildlife and the endangered species found there. The European Bison Show Reserve is another highlight, offering children the chance to see bison and other animals up close.
You can also explore other parts of Podlasie during a long weekend. The route through the "Land of Open Shutters" takes you through Trześcianka, Soce, and Puchły—villages famous for wooden houses adorned with colorful decorative details. A family outing to Narew National Park is another option; here, boardwalks lead across the wetlands, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching. For a rainy day, consider a trip to Białystok to visit the Army Museum, among other attractions. The exhibitions feature uniforms, weapons, and other military artifacts, making the visit a fascinating complement to exploring the region—especially for older children.

How to plan an autumn weekend with your child?
Regardless of the destination you choose, the plan should take into account your child's age and capabilities. With a toddler, it is best to choose short routes that allow for an easy return to the car or hotel. Older children, on the other hand, can be involved in selecting a hiking trail, castle, museum, or other attraction. While exploring, they can not only have fun but also learn about the nature, history, and culture of the region you are visiting. It is also wise to have a backup plan for bad weather and check if there are any indoor attractions nearby.
Before setting off, consider what to pack. You will need waterproof jackets, comfortable shoes, warmer sweatshirts, and a change of clothes. Snacks, a warm drink, and a small first-aid kit will come in handy for walks. Since it gets dark earlier in the autumn, it is best to start longer excursions in the morning and check the weather forecast.
Good preparation doesn't mean the family weekend has to be packed with activities from morning till night. A walk together, a meal, and playtime can bring children more joy than a hectic sightseeing schedule. The most important thing is for the autumn getaway to allow the whole family to relax, enjoy a change of scenery, and cherish their time together.
